GCSE Chemistry, Unit 6, Lesson 5 of 7

Reversible reactions and dynamic equilibrium

GCSE Chemistry, Rates of reaction and equilibrium, 20 minutes

Reactions that go both ways, the energy they transfer each way, and what equilibrium in a closed system means.

What you will learn

  • Use the ⇌ symbol and give examples of reversible reactions
  • Give the energy change of the reverse reaction
  • Describe dynamic equilibrium

Reactions that go both ways

In a reversible reaction the products can react to make the reactants again.

The symbol is ⇌.

A + B ⇌ C + D

  • Heat white ammonium chloride: it breaks down into ammonia and hydrogen chloride. Near the cool top of the tube they join up again as a white solid.
  • Changing the conditions can change which direction wins.
