Chess, Unit 1, Lesson 6 of 8

Capturing

About 1 min to read, then 9 practice questions

Taking a piece

Move onto its square. Your piece stays; the captured one leaves the board.

What the pieces are worth

A guide for trades: pawn 1, knight 3, bishop 3, rook 5, queen 9.

More on this

The king has no number: it is never traded, and losing it loses the game.

The values are a guide, not a rule. A well-placed knight can be worth more than a rook that has nothing to do.
