Chess, Unit 2, Lesson 4 of 6

En passant

Chess, Check, mate and draws, 7 minutes

A pawn that jumps two squares past an enemy pawn can be taken as if it had moved one, on the very next move only.

Taking in passing

The white pawn lands on the square the black pawn passed, and the black pawn comes off.

More on this

It only works pawn against pawn, when your pawn is on its fifth rank (White's rank 5, Black's rank 4) and the enemy pawn has just moved two squares to stand beside it.

You must do it on the very next move, or the chance is gone for good.
