How transition metals differ from Group 1, their ions with different charges, their coloured compounds and their use as catalysts.

Where they are, and which boards ask

The transition metals are the central block of the periodic table, between Group 2 and Group 3.

The ones you need are chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu).

  • AQA (Chemistry 8462, section 4.1.3): Chemistry only. Compare them with Group 1, and know their ions, colours and catalysts.
  • Edexcel (Chemistry 1CH0, 5.1C): Chemistry only. Know their high melting points and densities, coloured compounds and catalysts, with iron as the example.
  • OCR Gateway (C4.1): the same typical properties, in the topic on predicting reactions.
