Maths Essentials, Unit 6, Lesson 3 of 5

Expanding brackets

GCSE Maths, Algebraic expressions, 25 minutes

Multiply out a single bracket (with negatives too), expand and simplify sums of brackets, and meet double brackets.

What you will learn

  • Expand a(bx + c), including a negative a
  • Expand and simplify expressions with two brackets
  • Expand (x + a)(x + b)

Every term inside

The number or term outside multiplies every term inside.

  1. 3(2x − 5) = 6x − 15
  2. x(4x + 7) = 4x² + 7x
  3. −2(x − 4) = −2x + 8

The third one is where marks are lost: −2 × −4 = +8.

In this lesson

  1. Every term inside
  2. Expand, then collect
  3. Try it: Let the solver expand

7 practice questions, marked as you go; about 25 minutes in all.
