Calculating with standard form

GCSE Maths, Powers, roots and standard form, 25 minutes

Sign in

Multiply, divide, add and subtract in standard form without a calculator, and solve problems about space, cells and data.

What you will learn

  • Multiply and divide in standard form
  • Add and subtract in standard form
  • Use a calculator with standard form and round sensibly

Multiplying and dividing

Multiply (or divide) the numbers in front, then use the index laws on the powers of 10.

Then make sure the answer is in standard form.

  1. (4 × 10⁵) × (6 × 10³) = 24 × 10⁸
  2. = 2.4 × 10⁹
  3. (3 × 10⁴) ÷ (6 × 10⁻²) = 0.5 × 10⁶ = 5 × 10⁵
