Charts and diagrams

GCSE Maths, Statistics and charts, 25 minutes

Pictograms, bar charts, pie charts, stem-and-leaf diagrams, frequency polygons and time series, and how a chart can mislead.

What you will learn

  • Read and draw pictograms
  • Read bar charts and work out pie chart angles
  • Read and use a stem-and-leaf diagram
  • Draw a frequency polygon
  • Describe a trend in a time series
  • Say why a chart is misleading

Bar charts

Read each bar against the scale on the vertical axis; first work out what one square is worth (on a scale going 0, 5, 10, each square is 5).

Then answer with the numbers: the total is all the bars added, "how many more" is a subtraction, and one bar as a fraction of the total is bar ÷ total, simplified. Bars of 30, 20 and 10 give a total of 60, and the first is 30/60 = 1/2 of the total.
