Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 4, Lesson 3 of 4

Melodic and harmonic

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

One after the other, or together

The same two notes, apart and together

Two notes played one after the other make a melodic interval. Played together, they make a harmonic interval. A harmonic interval is written one note above the other.

Quick check

Is this interval melodic or harmonic?

Counted the same way

A melodic 6th and a harmonic 6th

A melodic or a harmonic interval is numbered the same way. Count the letters from the lower note up, and count both notes.

Quick check

What is the number of this interval?

Remember

  • One after the other: melodic. Together: harmonic.
  • Both are numbered the same way: count the letters, both notes included.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 6 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
