Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 3, Lesson 6 of 6

Degrees of the scale

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Numbered from 1

The degrees of G major, 1st to 8th

Each note of a scale is a degree, numbered from the first note. The first note is the 1st degree, the next the 2nd, and so on. The 8th is the first note again an octave higher.

Quick check

In G major, which note is the 3rd degree?

Worked example: find a degree

Count up to 6: D

Which note is the 6th degree of F major?

  1. Write the scale from F: F, G, A, B flat, C, D.
  2. Count them: F is the 1st, so the 6th is D.

Always start counting from the first note of the scale as 1, not 0.

Quick check

In C major, which note is the 5th degree?

Remember

  • Each note of a scale is a degree.
  • The first note is the 1st. The 8th is the first note an octave higher.
  • Count from the first note as 1.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 3 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
