Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 3, Lesson 3 of 6

G, D and F major

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

G major

F sharp makes 7 to 8 a semitone

Start the pattern on G and one step goes wrong. F to G is a tone, but 7 to 8 must be a semitone. So G major needs F sharp, so that 7 to 8 (F sharp to G) is a semitone.

D major

Two sharps: F sharp and C sharp

Start on D, and two notes need a sharp. D major needs F sharp and C sharp. Each sharp puts a semitone back where the pattern wants it.

Quick check

Which sharps does D major need?

F major

B flat makes 3 to 4 a semitone

Start on F, and A to B is a tone. But 3 to 4 must be a semitone. So F major needs B flat, so that 3 to 4 (A to B flat) is a semitone.

Quick check

Which note does F major change?

Remember

  • G major: F sharp.
  • D major: F sharp and C sharp.
  • F major: B flat.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
