Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 2, Lesson 7 of 8

An accidental lasts the bar

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

It keeps working

The second B is B flat too

An accidental lasts until the end of the bar. It counts for every later note on the same line or space. Here only the first B has a flat in front. The second B is still B flat.

Quick check

What is the note marked x?

The barline wipes it away

A new bar: plain B again

At the barline the accidental stops. In the next bar the note is back to normal. To cancel it sooner, inside the same bar, write a natural.

Quick check

What is the note marked x?

Remember

  • An accidental lasts to the end of the bar.
  • A barline stops it. A natural cancels it sooner.
  • Before naming a note, look back along the bar.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
