Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 2, Lesson 5 of 8

Middle C

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

A note on its own little line

Treble clef: below the stave
Bass clef: above the stave

Middle C is the C near the middle of a piano. It sits on a short extra line called a ledger line. In the treble clef it is one ledger line below the stave. In the bass clef it is one ledger line above the stave.

Quick check

Where is middle C in the treble clef?

One note, two places

The same middle C, written for each stave

Put the two staves together and middle C sits between them. Both are the same note with the same sound. It can just be written in two places.

Quick check

What is this note in the bass clef?

Count from a note you know

Count up a letter a step: G, A, B

To name any note, start from one you know: G in the treble clef, F in the bass clef, or middle C. Then count one letter for each line and space.

Remember

  • Middle C sits on a ledger line.
  • Treble clef: just below the stave. Bass clef: just above.
  • To name a note, count from G, F or middle C.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
