Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 2, Lesson 2 of 8

The musical alphabet

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Seven letters

A to G, then A again

Notes are named with letters. Music uses only seven: A B C D E F G. After G, the letters start again at A. So going up from G, the next note is A.

Quick check

Going up, which letter comes after G?

One step, one letter

Line, space, line, space, line

On the stave, every line and every space is one step. Going up, each step is the next letter: line, space, line, space. Going down, the letters go backwards: B, A, G, F, E.

Quick check

Going down from C, which letter comes next?

Remember

  • Seven letters: A B C D E F G, then A again.
  • Each line and each space is the next letter.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 3 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
