Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 2, Lesson 8 of 8

Counting from middle C

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Eight notes apart

From G up to the next G: eight notes

The letters go round and round. Count eight notes up from G and you reach G again. Two notes with the same letter, eight apart, are an octave apart. The top one sounds like the same note, only higher.

Quick check

How far apart are these two notes?

Which G?

Middle C, then the first G, then the second G: an octave above the first

A stave has more than one G. To say which one, count up from middle C. The first G above middle C is on the second line. The second G above middle C is an octave above the first G.

Going down

The first G below middle C: the top space of the bass stave

Going down works the same way. The first G below middle C is in the top space of the bass stave.

Quick check

Which G is this?

Remember

  • Same letter, eight notes apart: an octave.
  • Say which note by counting from middle C: the first, then the second.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
