Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 2, Lesson 1 of 8

The stave

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Five lines

The lines, counted from the bottom

Music is written on a stave. A stave has five lines. We count them from the bottom: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The curly sign at the start is a clef. You will meet it soon.

Quick check

How many lines does a stave have?

Lines and spaces

On a line
In a space

Between the lines are four spaces. A note can sit on a line. Then the line goes right through it. Or a note can sit in a space, between two lines.

Quick check

Where does this note sit?

Higher and lower

Each note a step higher than the last

The higher a note sits on the stave, the higher it sounds. A note further up sounds higher, like climbing a hill. Press play and listen to the notes go up.

Quick check

Which of these two notes sounds higher?

Remember

  • A stave has five lines and four spaces.
  • A note sits on a line or in a space.
  • Higher on the stave sounds higher.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min
