Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 7 of 8

Ties

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

One long sound

One sound lasting 3 beats

A tie is a curved line joining two notes of the same pitch. Play the first note, then hold it through the second. You get one sound as long as both notes added together. Ties often carry a sound across a barline.

Quick check

How many beats does the tied sound last?

A tie or a slur?

Same note: a tie
Different notes: a slur

A curved line joining two different notes is not a tie. That is a slur, which means play smoothly. A tie always joins the same note to itself.

Quick check

A curved line joins a G and an E. What is it?

Remember

  • A tie links two notes of the same pitch: play once, hold for both.
  • Add the tied notes together.
  • Different notes: a slur. Play smoothly.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
