Grade 1 Music Theory, Unit 6, Lesson 5 of 6

Signs on the notes

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Staccato and accent

Staccato dots, then accents

A staccato dot over or under a note: short and detached. An accent (>) means play the note with emphasis.

Quick check

What does the sign over the first note mean?

The pause

A pause on the last note

A pause is an arc over a dot. Hold the note longer than its written value.

Slurs and ties

A slur over four notes, then a tie joining the Gs

A slur is a curved line over different notes: play them smoothly, joined. A tie joins two notes of the same pitch into one long sound.

Quick check

A curved line joins C, D, E and F. What is it?

Remember

  • Staccato dot: short and detached. Accent (>): with emphasis.
  • Pause: hold the note longer.
  • Slur: different notes, smoothly. Tie: the same note, one sound.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
