About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

The key and the time

A melody in D minor

The key: one flat fits F major or D minor. The C sharp (the raised 7th of D minor) and the ending on D say D minor. The time: , three quaver beats in a bar.

Highest and lowest

Highest: the A in bar 3. Lowest: the first A
  1. Scan the whole melody once, not two notes at a time.
  2. The highest note is the A in bar 3.
  3. The lowest note is the first A, at the start of bar 1.

Count the bars from the start, and remember the key signature and any accidentals in that bar.

Quick check

In the melody, which bar has the tenuto?

An interval and a degree

The notes marked x: D up to A

From the D in bar 1 up to the A in bar 3 is a 5th: D, E, F, G, A. The C sharp is the 7th degree of D minor (raised).

Quick check

Remember

  • The highest or lowest note, or which bar it is in.
  • The number of an interval between two marked notes, or a note's degree.
  • The time signature, or what a word, dynamic or sign means.
