Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 8, Lesson 2 of 2

Five questions, one extract

About 2 min to read, then 4 practice questions

The key and the time

The extract in D minor

The key: one flat fits F major or D minor. The C sharp in bar 7 is D minor's raised 7th, and the extract ends on D: D minor. The time: , four crotchet beats in every bar.

Words and signs

Bars 1 to 3: andante, p, and tenuto lines in bar 3
  • Andante: at a walking pace. rall. in bar 7 is gradually getting slower.
  • p at the start is quiet; mf begins the second phrase in bar 5.
  • The lines over the notes of bar 3 are tenuto: hold each note for its full value.

Quick check

In the extract, which bar has the tenuto lines?

The same rhythm again

Bar 1
Bar 5: the same rhythm

Bars 5 and 6 repeat the rhythm of bars 1 and 2. Bar 4 ends with a crotchet rest, one beat of silence.

Quick check

Which bar repeats the rhythm of bar 2?

An interval and a degree

Bars 4 and 5: from x down to y

From the A in bar 4 down to the D at the start of bar 5 is a 5th: D, E, F, G, A. The B flat in bar 2 is the 6th degree of D minor.

Quick check

In D minor, which degree is the note A?

Remember

  • Answer from the music in front of you, not from memory of another piece.
  • Notes marked with letters: find every letter first, then read each note with the key signature and any accidental earlier in its bar.
  • The questions are linked: the key you found in the first answer helps with a degree or an interval later.

If two answers seem possible, look again: only one of them fits what is printed.

Practise this: 4 questions, about 15 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
