Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 8, Lesson 1 of 2

Reading a longer extract

About 2 min to read, then 4 practice questions

A page of real music

An eight-bar extract in D minor to read through

The last section of the exam prints one longer extract, often eight bars or more. It asks about five things in it. Nothing is new: what is new is finding the answer in a page of real music.

Quick check

What do the longer extract's questions ask you to use?

Read it all through first

Bars 5 to 8: the second phrase begins like the first

Read the whole extract before the first question:

  1. The key: the key signature, the last note, and a raised 7th.
  2. The time: the beats in a bar, and what kind.
  3. The words and signs: speed, dynamics, signs on notes.
  4. The shape: many extracts are built in phrases of four bars.

A number at the start of each new line tells you where you are.

Quick check

An extract has one flat, a C sharp near the end, and ends on D. Which key?

Remember

  • Read it all through first.
  • Key, then time, then words and signs, then phrases.

Practise this: 4 questions, about 15 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
