Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 4, Lesson 3 of 4

Melodic and harmonic

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Apart or together

The same 5th, apart and together

Notes one after the other make a melodic interval. Notes played together make a harmonic interval. A harmonic interval is written one note above the other.

Quick check

Is this interval melodic or harmonic?

The same ladder

Climb from the lower note: F to D is six rungs

Number a harmonic interval on the same ladder. Put the lower note on rung 1 and climb to the upper note, counting both. F up to D is six rungs: a 6th.

Quick check

What is the number of this interval?

Remember

  • One after the other: melodic. Together: harmonic.
  • Both go on the same ladder, from the lower note.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 6 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
