Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 3, Lesson 2 of 7

Finding the key from a key signature

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

The order of sharps and flats

Sharps: F, C, G
Flats: B, E, A

Sharps are always written in the order F, C, G. Flats are always written in the order B, E, A. Later grades add D, A, E, B to the sharps and D, G, C, F to the flats.

Quick check

Which sharp comes first in a key signature?

Last sharp, second-last flat

Sharps: a semitone above the last sharp
Flats: the second-last flat

With sharps, the key is a semitone above the last sharp. With flats, the key is the second-last flat. One flat on its own is F major.

Quick check

A key signature has two flats, B flat and E flat. Which major key is it?

Remember

  • Sharps: F, C, G. Flats: B, E, A.
  • Sharps: a semitone above the last sharp. Flats: the second-last flat.
