Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 3, Lesson 5 of 7

Writing a scale, up and down

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Worked example: E harmonic minor

Raise the 7th: D sharp, as an accidental
  1. Write the letters first, E up to E, in semibreves.
  2. Add the key signature: F sharp.
  3. Raise the 7th as an accidental: D sharp.

Quick check

After the letters and the key signature, what is the last step for a harmonic minor scale?

Coming down

B flat major coming down

A scale coming down has the same notes in reverse order. Without a key signature, write each sharp or flat in front of its note. In a minor scale coming down, the 7th is still raised.

Quick check

A major, coming down from the top A. Which note comes next?

Remember

  • Semibreves, one octave, letters first.
  • Key signature, or each sharp or flat by its note.
  • Coming down: the same notes in reverse; a minor 7th still raised.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
