Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 2, Lesson 2 of 4

Ledger lines on the bass stave

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Below and above the bass stave

Two ledger lines below, then two above

In the bass clef, below the stave: the first ledger line is E, the second C. Above it: the first is middle C, the second E.

Quick check

What is the note on the first ledger line above the bass stave?

Both clefs, one rule

Treble: two above is C
Bass: two below is C

The rule is the same on both staves. Find the nearest line you know, then count a letter for each line and space. An accidental still lasts until the end of the bar.

Quick check

In the bass clef, which note sits on the second ledger line below the stave?

Remember

  • Bass stave, below: E then C. Above: middle C then E.
  • Count from the nearest line you know.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
