Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 2, Lesson 4 of 4

The same note in the other clef

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Worked example: bass to treble

The same D in the treble clef: just below the stave
  1. Name it: the space above middle C is the D just above middle C.
  2. In the treble clef, middle C is the first ledger line below.
  3. So that D is the space just below the stave.

Name the note, find how far it is from middle C, then find that place in the other clef.

Quick check

Why not draw the note on the same line or space of the other stave?

Treble to bass

Treble: the B below middle C
Bass: the space above the top line

It works the other way too. The B just below middle C hangs under the treble stave's ledger line. In the bass clef it is the space above the top line.

Quick check

Write the treble clef's middle C in the bass clef. Where does it go?

Remember

  • Name the note, with how far it is from middle C.
  • Find that place on the other stave.
  • Never copy the place on the stave.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
