Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 2, Lesson 3 of 4

Where the clefs meet

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

The same sound, two places

The A below middle C, treble clef
The same A in the bass clef: the top line

The treble and bass staves share the notes around middle C. The same sound can be written in either clef, in a different place on each stave.

Quick check

A treble clef note is on the second ledger line below the stave. Where is the same note in the bass clef?

An octave apart

The same letter, eight notes higher

A note can also move an octave: the same letter name, eight letters higher or lower. "The second E above middle C" means count up to the first E, then an octave more.

Quick check

How far is the second E above middle C from the first E?

Remember

  • The same sound sits in a different place in each clef.
  • An octave: the same letter, eight letters higher or lower.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
