Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 6 of 9

Completing a bar in the new times

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Worked example: a bar of 3/2

6 beats needed, 4 there: a minim
  1. A bar of holds three minims: 6 crotchet beats.
  2. The semibreve takes 4.
  3. 2 are missing, so the note that completes a bar is a minim.

Quick check

A bar of holds a minim. Which note completes it?

What a full bar holds

Three minim beats: 6
Three quaver beats: 1 and a half

Count everything in crotchets, whatever the beat. holds 6, holds 8 and holds 4. holds 1 and a half. A barline goes straight after the note that fills the bar.

Quick check

How many crotchet beats does a bar of hold?

Remember

  • Count in crotchets: 3/2 holds 6, 4/2 8, 2/2 4, 3/8 1 and a half.
  • Beats needed take away beats there: the note that completes the bar.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
