Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 2 of 9

The dotted semibreve and dotted rests

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

The dotted semibreve

Three minims a bar: a minim and a semibreve, then one dotted semibreve

The dotted semibreve is new at Grade 2. A semibreve is 4, half of 4 is 2, so a dotted semibreve is 6. It fills a bar of three minim beats on its own.

Quick check

How many crotchet beats does a dotted semibreve last?

Dotted rests

A dotted crotchet rest, then a quaver rest

Rests can be dotted too, and the dot works the same way. A dotted crotchet rest lasts 1 and a half beats. A dotted quaver rest lasts three quarters of a beat.

Quick check

How long is a dotted crotchet rest?

Adding them up

3 + a half + a half = 4

To add up a group of notes, count in crotchets and add the numbers. A dotted minim and two quavers make 3 + 1 = 4.

Remember

  • Dotted semibreve: 6 crotchet beats.
  • Dotted rests work like dotted notes: half as long again.
  • Add a group by counting in crotchets.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 3 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
