Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 9 of 9

Grouping notes in the new times

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

A beam stays inside a beat

4/4: four quavers over beats 1 and 2
3/4: three pairs

A beam stays inside a beat, so the player sees where each beat starts. In six quavers go in three pairs. In four quavers can share a beam on beats 1 and 2, never across the middle.

Quick check

In , how are six quavers beamed?

Minim beats and 3/8

2/2: four quavers fill one minim beat
3/8: one group for the bar

In the beat is a minim, so four quavers share one beam. In the whole bar is usually one beamed group.

Quick check

In , how many quavers can share one beam?

Remember

  • A beam stays inside a beat.
  • 2/2: four quavers a beam. 3/8: one group a bar.
