Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 1 of 9

Notes, rests and dots: a recap

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Five note values

Each note, then its rest

Count note values in crotchets. Each value lasts half the one before: semibreve 4, minim 2, crotchet 1. A quaver is half a beat, a semiquaver a quarter of a beat. Every note has a rest of the same length, from the semibreve rest down.

Quick check

How many semiquavers fit into one crotchet?

A dot adds half

A dotted minim, then a dotted crotchet and a quaver

A dot makes a note half as long again. A dotted minim is 2 + 1 = 3 beats. A dotted crotchet is 1 and a half beats.

Quick check

How many beats does a dotted crotchet last?

Remember

  • Semibreve 4, minim 2, crotchet 1, quaver half, semiquaver a quarter.
  • Every note has a rest of the same length.
  • A dot adds half.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 3 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
