Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 8 of 9

Ties and grouping rests

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Recap: ties

The tied Es make one sound of 1 + 2 = 3 beats

A tie joins two notes of the same pitch into one sound, often across a barline. Add the two lengths together.

Finish the beat first

Finish beat 1, then beat by beat
A crotchet rest for each silent beat

Rests are grouped so a player can always see the beats. Finish the beat first. After that, every whole beat gets a rest of its own. A whole bar of silence is a semibreve rest, in any time signature.

Quick check

In , a crotchet is followed by three silent beats. Which rests are right?

Half a bar of silence

A minim rest on beat 1, then on beat 3

In , half a bar of silence can be one minim rest. It goes only on beat 1 or beat 3, never across the middle of the bar.

Quick check

In , beats 2 and 3 are silent. Which rests are right?

Remember

  • A tie: add the tied notes together.
  • Finish the beat first, then a rest for each whole beat.
  • A minim rest in 4/4: on beat 1 or 3 only.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
