Triplets

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Three in the time of two

Three triplet quavers fill one beat
Three triplet crotchets last one minim

A triplet is a group of three notes played in the time of two of the same kind. A small 3 over or under the group shows it. Three triplet quavers last one crotchet, the time of two quavers.

Quick check

Three triplet crotchets last as long as:

Triplets with rests

A rest inside a triplet

A triplet group can include a rest. It still takes one of the three places. To check a bar, replace the triplet with the two notes it stands for.

Quick check

A triplet of quavers has a rest in the middle. How long does the whole group last?

Remember

  • A triplet: three in the time of two, marked 3.
  • A rest in a triplet still takes one of the three places.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
