Grade 2 Music Theory, Unit 6, Lesson 5 of 6

Signs on a note

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Four new signs

A strong accent, a wedge, a line, a dot and a line, then a pause
  • A hat (^): strong accent, a strong accent, stronger than an ordinary accent.
  • A wedge: staccatissimo, very short and detached.
  • A short line: tenuto, held for its full value, slightly stressed.
  • A dot and a line: semi-staccato, slightly detached.

Quick check

What does a wedge over a note mean?

The Grade 1 signs

Staccato dots, an accent, a pause

A dot is staccato: short and detached. An accent (>) means play the note with emphasis. A pause means hold the note longer than its written value.

Quick check

Which is shorter: a staccato dot or a wedge?

Remember

  • ^ strong accent. Wedge very short. Line held, slightly stressed.
  • Dot and line: slightly detached.
  • Dot short, > emphasis, pause held longer.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min
