Grade 3 names an interval by number and type. Count the letters for the number; then major, perfect or minor, checked against the major scale.

Major and perfect

The number still comes from counting the letter names, counting both notes. Grade 3 adds the type. Above the tonic of a major key:

  • 2nds, 3rds, 6ths and 7ths are major;
  • 4ths, 5ths and octaves are perfect.

Quick check

Above the tonic of a major key, what type is the 5th?
