Grade 3 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 5 of 8

Dots and triplets, down to the smallest

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

The dotted semiquaver

A dotted semiquaver and a demisemiquaver: half a beat

A dot makes a note half as long again, at every size. A semiquaver is two demisemiquavers, so a dotted semiquaver is three. With one demisemiquaver after it, it makes half a beat, like a quaver.

Quick check

A dotted semiquaver lasts as long as how many demisemiquavers?

Triplets at every size

Triplet quavers fill a crotchet; triplet demisemiquavers fill a semiquaver

A triplet fits three notes into the time of two of the same kind. Three triplet quavers last a crotchet. Three triplet demisemiquavers last a semiquaver.

Quick check

Three triplet demisemiquavers last as long as:

Remember

  • A dot adds half: a dotted semiquaver is 3 demisemiquavers.
  • A triplet: three in the time of two, at any size.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 3 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
