Grade 3 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 8 of 8

Beams in compound time

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

One beam to a beat

Four dotted crotchet beats, beamed in threes

Quavers in compound time are beamed in threes, one group to each dotted beat. Beamed in pairs, a bar of would look like .

Quick check

In , how are six quavers beamed?

Spot the bar that hides a beat

Right: two quaver rests finish beat 1
Wrong: a crotchet rest ends the beat

Check each beat in turn: can you see where it starts? The second bar's crotchet rest covers the last two quavers of beat 1, so the beat is hidden.

Quick check

In , a quaver starts beat 1 and the rest of the beat is silent. Which rests finish it?

Remember

  • One beam to a dotted beat: quavers in threes.
  • Every beat must be seen: no beam or rest across a beat.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
