The demisemiquaver

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Halving all the way down

Eight demisemiquavers

Each value lasts half the one before. The demisemiquaver is half a semiquaver: eight of them last one crotchet. Count the tails or beams: one for a quaver, two for a semiquaver, three for a demisemiquaver.

Quick check

How many tails or beams does a demisemiquaver have?

The demisemiquaver rest

A demisemiquaver rest at the start of the bar

Every note has a rest of the same length. The demisemiquaver rest has three hooks, one more than the semiquaver rest.

Quick check

A rest has three hooks. What is it?

Remember

  • Each value is half the one before.
  • Demisemiquaver: three tails, 8 to a crotchet; its rest has three hooks.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 3 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
