Music in context shows a short Grade 4 melody and asks about it. Read it as a player would: key and time signatures, words and signs, then accidentals.

Three things to read first

A melody to read

The music in context section asks about a piece of music. This unit starts with a short melody; the next unit reads a longer extract. Read the melody first:

  1. The key signature and the time signature: which two keys fit, and how many beats in a bar?
  2. Words and signs: the speed word, the dynamics, the articulation.
  3. Accidentals: a raised note near the end often shows a minor key's leading note.

Quick check

This melody has one sharp, a D sharp near the end, and ends on E. Which key?
