Grade 4 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 4 of 8

Double dots

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

A half, then a quarter

Each bar adds up to four beats

A double dot adds half the note's value, then a quarter of it.

  • Double-dotted minim: 2 + 1 + a half = 3 and a half beats.
  • Double-dotted crotchet: 1 + a half + a quarter = 1 and three quarters.

Quick check

How many crotchet beats does a double-dotted minim last?

Double-dotted rests

A double-dotted crotchet rest, then a semiquaver: two beats

Rests take double dots the same way. A double-dotted crotchet rest and a semiquaver fill two beats together.

Quick check

A double-dotted crotchet rest and one note make two crotchet beats. Which note?

Remember

  • A double dot: a half, then a quarter more.
  • Double-dotted minim 3 and a half; double-dotted crotchet 1 and three quarters.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 3 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
