In compound time each beat is a dotted note that divides into three: the top number is 6, 9 or 12. Divide it by 3 for the beats: has two dotted crotchet beats. Grade 4 adds dotted minim and dotted quaver beats.

Remember

  • Simple: top number 2, 3 or 4. Compound: 6, 9 or 12, divided by 3 for the beats.
  • New: 4/8, 6/4, 9/4, 6/16, 9/16, 12/16.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
