At Grade 5 an interval can start on any note at all. Count the letters for the number; then compare with the major scale of the lower note for the type.

First the number

A flat up to F: the number stays a 6th

Count the letter names, counting both ends. The accidentals never change the number: A flat up to F is a 6th, whatever the sharps or flats.

Quick check

What number is the interval from G sharp up to E flat?
