Grade 5 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 4 of 7

Note values and double dots

About 2 min to read, then 6 practice questions

Breve to demisemiquaver

Learn these by heart

NoteCrotchetsNoteCrotchets
breve8crotchet1
semibreve4quavera half
minim2semiquavera quarter
demisemiquaveran eighth

Each note value is half the one before it, and every note has a rest of the same length. Count them all in crotchets.

Quick check

How many semiquavers last as long as a minim?

Dots and double dots

Dotted minim: 3 crotchets
Double-dotted minim: 3 and a half

A dot adds half the note's value. A double dot adds half, then a quarter: a double-dotted minim is 2 + 1 + a half = 3 and a half crotchets. Rests take dots the same way.

Quick check

How many crotchets does a double-dotted crotchet last?

Remember

  • Each value is half the one before; count in crotchets.
  • A double dot: a half, then a quarter.

Practise this: 6 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
