Grade 5 Music Theory, Unit 1, Lesson 3 of 7

Which time signature fits?

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Worked example: five crotchets

The time signature is missing

Add up one bar, then find the signature that holds exactly that much.

  1. In crotchets: 1 and a half, a half, then three crotchets: 5.
  2. No dotted groups: the beat is a crotchet.
  3. Five crotchet beats: .

Quick check

A bar adds up to 7 quavers, grouped 2 + 2 + 3. Which time signature fits?

The grouping decides

3/4: three pairs
6/8: two threes

Two time signatures can hold the same amount: and both hold six quavers. The beams decide: pairs show crotchet beats, threes show dotted beats.

Quick check

A bar holds six quavers beamed in three pairs. Which fits?

Remember

  • Add up one bar, in crotchets.
  • Same total? The grouping decides.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
