Writing a melody for a voice to sing words: stressed syllables on strong beats, and one note to each syllable.

Speak the words first

GAR-den, GAR-den: GAR, the stressed syllable, on the first beat of each bar

Before writing a note, say the words aloud and listen for the syllables you lean on.

More on this

In "GAR-den" the first syllable is stressed; in "a-WAY" the second is. Capital letters show the stressed syllable in these lessons.
