The performance directions a Grade 6 extract may print, in Italian, French and German, read word by word, and the marks printed on the notes themselves.
Three languages
Read a direction one word at a time, then put the meaning together.
Most directions in printed music are in Italian. Composers from France and Germany, especially after about 1850, often wrote them in their own language, so a Grade 6 extract may use French or German too.
Many directions are built from a main word and small words that change it: poco più mosso is "a little more movement", sehr ruhig is "very calm".
