How spacing changes when the parts are instruments.

Close and open

Close: keyboard style
Open: wider gaps low down

In keyboard style the right hand keeps close position; in a quartet the parts may spread, but keep the gaps between the upper parts within an octave, with wider gaps low down, as in nature's harmonic series.
