Sound in rooms
Working in the room you have
Most recording happens in rooms not built for it.
Choose a spot for a vocal
Three spots for a vocal: hear each, then pick one.
Try it
- Hear all three spots
- Pick the one the coach would choose
Most recording happens in rooms that were never built for it. The skill is choosing the spot, the distance and the pattern.
Three places in an ordinary flat. Pick one and hear how much room comes with the voice.
When you cannot change the room, change what the mic hears of it: get closer, so the direct sound dominates; choose a directional pattern and point its null at the worst reflection; put soft material behind the singer, because the mic points that way and its front hears that wall.
A clean, dry, close take is the flexible one: you can always add space in the mix, you can never take a bad room out of a recording.
