Chess, Unit 1, Lesson 4 of 8

The knight

About 1 min to read, then 9 practice questions

The L shape

Two squares one way, then one to the side. It jumps over anything in between.

Jumping

In the start position, only the knights can move before a pawn.

More on this

A knight always lands on the other colour: from a light square to a dark one, and back.

In the middle a knight has 8 squares; in a corner only 2. That is why knights are usually best near the centre.
