The notes outside the chord in a printed extract's top part, marked with a star: how to tell a passing note from an auxiliary note by the notes either side.

A star on the top part

Two notes outside the chord under them, marked A and B here; the exam marks such a note with a star

A note marked \* is not a note of the chord under it: you name the kind of decoration.

More on this

First check it really is outside the chord: collect the chord's notes from both staves. A note that belongs to the chord is not a decoration, however it moves.
