Every key's five closest relatives, found in two steps at most.
Five close relatives
Grade 6 used three related keys: the dominant, the subdominant and the relative.
Grade 7 adds the relative of the dominant and the relative of the subdominant. Together they are the five related keys.
| From C major | Key |
|---|---|
| dominant | G major |
| subdominant | F major |
| relative | A minor |
| relative of the dominant | E minor |
| relative of the subdominant | D minor |
Take the steps in order: first to the dominant (one more sharp, or one fewer flat) or the subdominant (one fewer sharp, or one more flat), then, if asked, to its relative (the same key signature).
